I'm really enjoying Morrison's Batman, who designs a new Batmobile, guns it behind a Z-list criminal at top speed for a test drive, and then turns to a giddy Robin and expresses mild ambivalence that it didn't turn out exactly like he imagined. There's probably a bit in there about the arc, the artist, Morrison, and even the movie, but this establishes the character perfectly.

Morrison's whole run, especially R.I.P., is about Batman's loose grip on his runaway imagination - a decades-old motif for a hero constantly gassed, injected, and brainwashed into fever dreams by his foes.

Nestor Carbonell was really brilliant on that show, and since his competition was Patrick Warburton, that's no small feat. Whenever he interacted with Lady Liberty, you got the sense that he really, truly loved her but was terrified or incapable of expressing it. Or felt he just wasn't worthy of Janet, or felt she would reject him. And Liz Vassey matched him beautifully, showing WHY Batmanuel had fallen for her so hard without actually her having those kinds of feelings for him. It was a great relationship and the best thing about the show in my opinion.

When we do see that side, it tends to come on too strong and take on uncomfortable homoerotic overtones.
