It may be what he <i>thinks</i>, but not what actually occurred. AFAIK no one's asked Andrews about this directly, but I took away from that scene that it was meant to be ambiguous, that MJ may have gotten cancer for other reasons, and Peter, in his massive self-absorption, blamed himself.
