The 'outlaw' element is definitely a real appeal of Marvel to even young white boys. The authority figures all love Superman and couldn't stop him if they wanted to; he needs Clark Kent as an identity to pretend to be subject to their law. This isn't something that reflects the experience of most young men. Spider-man was a poor schmuck who couldn't catch a break and who could get hurt like any other guy. That appeals to you when you're a kid.

@Dane: Dane, my understanding is that loss leaders are essentially stock sold at a lower price to boost sales. You don't make as much money, but you sell more copies.

So if you sell the first wave of fat Milestone trades at ten bucks and have a huge number of issues in there, they would hopefully sell many more copies than usual. This has the benefit of creating more potential fans, so that when the second trade comes out at slightly higher, they'll be more likely to go "Oh, I liked the first one of these. This price isn't too bad."

Make sense?

Honestly, I wish DC wasn't merging Milestone with their current DCverse. Static in Terror Titans hurts the soul.
