Real is out, it's on volume 5 I think? They're actually doing a nice job with it-it's in that same "prestige" format they're putting 20th Century Boys and Pluto out in, and it has a few color pages.

indeed. Viz needs to fucking get the rest of the great sports mangas stateside stat. I mean Eyeshield 21 is ok (Hiruma redeems it) and actually putting Slam Dunk in SJ was a good move, but they need Rookies, REAL (the documentary Murderball, but with Basketball instead of Rugby), Happy! (Urasawa dammit), and especially Hajime no fucking Ippo. But I digress.

the whole idea of a "manga" canon is just too vast to merit puttign effort into it. Also it's so subjective and include so many genres and subgenres.

Manga is such a big term and includes so many great series many wouldn't given a second thought. I mean there are sports mangas I'd add (fucking translate Rookies already, Viz) but many people dismiss sports mangas from the get go.

Plus then you have to consider content. Berserk is a masterpiece, simply one of the greatest mangas ever. period. But this manga pretty much justifies the concept of a rating system, it will give early teens nightmares.
