ULTIMATE EDIT

Back in the end of 2007, Marvel released Ultimates 3 by Jeph Loeb. It took the fears everybody had about the title and proved worse than expected. The entire spirit of what Marvel was going for with the Ultimate universe was killed with five issues of bad characterization, stupid murder mysteries, funky art and needless exploitation. Similar to MightyGodKing’s take on Civil War, I joined ManiacClown to take on the series and try to improve it.

I’ll let you be the judge.

ULTIMATUM EDIT

Months after Ultimates 3 had ended, Loeb’s assault continued with Ultimatum, a badly-written disaster event meant to “shake up” the Ultimate universe. Rather than write anything of substance, he instead went for a snuff comic where the kill count took center stage. It’s way worse than Ultimates 3. We had no choice but to give it the business.

NEW ULTIMATE EDIT

In 2010, Loeb relaunched the Ultimates series with New Ultimates at the same time that Mark Millar started up Ultimate Avengers, which wrapped up eighteen issues before Loeb and artist Frank Cho could get out five. The series is an obvious improvement, as it’s incredibly hard to top the badness of Ultimatum. The storytelling is better and the art is superb, but it’s still completely ripe for parody.
